Normal Behavior – Bullying Checklist

Timberline Elementary

This checklist is a tool created by Timberline’s Positive Behavior Team.  It is to be used as a guideline to help determine whether behavior is a result of normal conflict or bullying. Behaviors alone do not determine whether there is bullying occurring. Behaviors can be physical or verbal.

Normal Conflict

ð     Spontaneous

ð     Usually between friends

ð     Able to come to mutual resolution

ð     The behaviors are overt

ð     Reactionary (a reaction to an event)

ð     Fueled by anger or hurt due to a specific event

ð     There is remorse

ð     Stories mostly agree

ð     Parties admit their role in the conflict

Bullying Behaviors

ð     Repeated behaviors over time  ________________________________________________

ð     Purposeful

ð     Imbalance of power – size, verbal skills, age

ð     Bully is seeking control – power, material things, popularity

ð     Covert – looks for opportunity; doesn’t want to be caught

ð     Bully may deny there is a problem – blames victim

ð     Victim is fearful of the bully – wants to avoid the bully

ð     Bully may be apathetic about his/her role

ð     A threat is made indicating the bully will retaliate if the victim tells anyone
